Director of Regional Development and Transformation

OCHA, the humanitarian office for crisis coordination, plays a vital role in the United Nations system. The organization’s mission is to deliver aid quickly to those affected by natural disasters or conflict.

OCHA operates under the leadership of the United Nations Secretary-General, working closely with other UN agencies, governments, and humanitarian partners to respond to crises worldwide.

The Director of Regional Development and Transformation will play a critical role in shaping OCHA’s strategy for Africa, focusing on regional integration, economic transformation, and social development.

This senior position requires a highly skilled and experienced professional who can provide strategic vision, lead teams, and collaborate with stakeholders to drive meaningful change in the region.

The Director will work closely with ECA Divisions and other SROs to assess economic and social development needs, formulate policy options, organize research, design program initiatives, and monitor results.

• Formulate and implement the substantive work program of the SRO-NA, overseeing the management of activities and ensuring timely completion of programmed tasks.
• Provide intellectual, technical, and managerial vision and leadership for the SRO-NA, serving as principal technical and substantive adviser to the Executive Secretary.
• Coordinate the work carried out by different work units under SRO-NA and other agencies and bodies of the United Nations system, providing programmatic/substantive reviews of drafts prepared by others.
• Report to intergovernmental bodies on budget/program performance or on programmatic/substantive issues, presenting clear, objective, and data-driven reports.
• Lead knowledge generation and dissemination across the sub-region, fostering teamwork and communication among staff in the SRO and across organizational boundaries.

To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate should possess:

• A minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in economic research, management, and analysis of socio-economic development issues.
• Proven ability to produce high-quality reports and papers on technical issues, review and edit the work of others, and manage the work of a team.
• Expert knowledge of regional integration and social and economic structural transformation in the context of Africa, including experience in facilitating and conducting intergovernmental processes.
• Familiarity with international development policies and programs, particularly those related to economic integration, poverty reduction, and sustainable development.
