Job Description

The Director will be responsible for formulating and implementing the substantive work programme of the Sub-Regional Office for Northern Africa (SRO-NA) and overseeing the management of activities undertaken by SRO-NA. This includes ensuring that programmed activities are carried out in a timely fashion and coordinating work in different areas both within the SRO and Headquarters, and with other organizations of the United Nations System, as appropriate.

The successful candidate will provide intellectual, technical, and managerial vision and leadership for the SRO-NA, serving as a principal technical and substantive adviser to the Executive Secretary on all matters pertaining to regional integration, social and economic structural transformation, and cooperation in the Northern Africa sub-region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate and implement the substantive work programme of SRO-NA
  • Oversee the management of activities undertaken by SRO-NA
  • Provide intellectual, technical, and managerial vision and leadership for SRO-NA
  • Serve as principal technical and substantive adviser to the Executive Secretary
  • Assess economic and social development needs and formulate relevant policy options
  • Organize research, design, and execute programme initiatives, and monitor results in close collaboration with ECA Divisions and other SROs
  • Co-coordinate the work carried out by different work units under SRO-NA and by other agencies and bodies of the United Nations system
  • Prepare reports for presentation to intergovernmental bodies
  • Ensure that outputs produced by SRO-NA maintain high-quality standards

Required Skills and Qualifications

To be considered for this position, applicants must possess an advanced university degree in economics, social sciences, development management, or a related area. A minimum of fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in economic research, management, and analysis of socio-economic development issues is also required. Experience in leading a team of specialists in an interdisciplinary effort and management experience in development programmes in an international organization are desirable.
