Job Summary

The Microalgae Lab Technician will be responsible for daily operations related to microalgae cultivation under controlled laboratory and greenhouse conditions. The position includes preparation of media, maintenance of algae cultures, and technical support for experimental and production activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cultivation of microalgae in flasks, photobioreactors, and raceway ponds.
  • Prepare media and sterilize equipment using autoclaves and other sterilization techniques.
  • Monitor key growth parameters (pH, temperature, turbidity, nutrient levels).
  • Assist researchers in conducting experiments and collecting biomass samples.
  • Maintain cleanliness and perform sanitation of the algae cultivation systems.
  • Record experimental and operational data in appropriate logs.
  • Participate in troubleshooting culture contamination and performance issues.
  • Maintain stock inventory of chemicals, nutrients, and consumables.
  • Follow all lab safety and biosafety procedures.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum: Technician/Bachelor's degree (BAC+2/3) in biology, biotechnology, aquaculture or related field.
  • Experience in microalgae or microbiological culture is a strong asset.
  • Hands-on experience with basic lab equipment (autoclaves, spectrophotometers, microscopes).
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to follow protocols precisely.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Willingness to work under varying environmental conditions (e.g., in greenhouses).
