ROLE SUMMARY:

We are excited to be taking applications for the Head of EAL position, to start in April 2026.
The Head of EAL is responsible for providing strategic leadership, vision, and direction for the school's English as an Additional Language provision. This includes developing and implementing effective strategies to remove language barriers to learning, enabling pupils to participate fully, achieve their potential, and raise aspirations.
The role works collaboratively across departments to promote, support, and evaluate high-quality teaching and learning strategies that maximize student outcomes in English. The Head of EAL ensures that planning for language development is rigorous, responsive to emerging issues, and informed by data.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide strategic leadership and vision for all aspects of EAL provision.
- Lead, develop and manage the EAL department, including staff support and appraisals.
- Design and oversee a progressive EAL curriculum with clear entry/exit protocols.
- Monitor pupil progress, coordinate English proficiency assessments, and report outcomes.
- Support, mentor and train teachers to deliver high-quality EAL teaching.
- Liaise with Admissions and senior leaders to ensure effective transition and provision for EAL pupils.
- Raise the profile of EAL across the school through events, communications and community engagement.
- Maintain a teaching load, modelling outstanding practice and contributing to whole-school culture.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
- A degree in Education, Linguistics, TESOL (or equivalent), plus at least three years of relevant experience in teaching and EAL.
- Experience in an educational institution, ideally with leadership or programme management responsibilities.
- Recognised teaching qualifications and a proven ability to deliver excellent classroom practice.
- Strong data literacy, with the ability to analyse student performance and use it to inform improvement.
- Excellent organisational, ICT and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and lead colleagues.
- A genuine commitment to safeguarding, pupil wellbeing, and contributing to the wider life of the school.
