About the Chemical & Biochemical Sciences Green Process Engineering (CBS)

The Chemical & Biochemical Sciences Green Process Engineering Department (CBS) is a component of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). The main objective of CBS is to set up a distinctive research-teaching program, of international level, to meet the research and teaching challenges of UM6P, in particular on green and environmental chemistry applied to all aspects of chemical sciences: organic and inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical biology, biochemical and thermal reactions.

Research at CBS is organized around several major areas, which aim to answer challenging industrial questions, from complex chemical and biochemical reactions to scale-up and validation of process engineering. CBS projects aim at an in-depth understanding of the molecular mechanisms of all transformations in order to propose new original alternatives in terms of efficiency, environmental friendliness and sustainability

We are seeking a motivated PhD student to join our team in developing nanocomposite superabsorbent-fertilizer hydrogels. By integrating nanomaterials and biopolymeric matrices, the hydrogel is designed to address the dual challenge of water scarcity and nutrient loss, particularly in arid and semi-arid agricultural regions. This research aims to enhance soil moisture conservation and improve fertilizer use efficiency, ultimately contributing to more sustainable and resilient agricultural practices.

Research Objectives:

  • Design and synthesize nanocomposite superabsorbent-fertilizer hydrogels by combining biopolymeric matrices with functional nanomaterials to achieve high water retention and controlled nutrient release.
  • Enhance water use efficiency and mitigate drought stress by developing hydrogels capable of absorbing and slowly releasing water in arid and semi-arid soil conditions.
  • Improve nutrient delivery through the incorporation of fertilizers into the hydrogel network, enabling gradual and sustained nutrient release aligned with plant uptake needs.
  • Evaluate the physicochemical properties, swelling behavior, and nutrient release kinetics of the hydrogels to optimize their performance for agricultural applications.
  • Support sustainable agriculture by reducing nutrient leaching, improving soil moisture retention, and boosting crop productivity while minimizing environmental impact.

Candidate Profile:

  • Master's degree in Agronomy, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Solid foundation in fertilizer chemistry, polymer synthesis, biopolymer extraction, and soil science.
  • Proven experience in the development of fertilizers, nutrient release systems, or strategies for improving soil health is highly desirable.
  • Highly motivated and genuinely passionate about interdisciplinary research in sustainable agriculture and environmental protection.
  • Demonstrates strong personal qualities such as punctuality, autonomy, and a committed work ethic.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (both written and spoken), with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts clearly and effectively.
