This research area focuses on the urgent need for comprehensive and systematic evaluation of teacher education programs across Morocco and the broader African continent. While significant investments have been made in both initial (pre-service) and in-service teacher training, there is often a lack of robust data to assess the effectiveness of these programs in developing core teaching competencies and improving learning outcomes. Some programs have shown promise—particularly those integrating practical classroom experiences with pedagogical theory—but many still face challenges related to coherence, contextual relevance, and sustainability. Key issues include variability in program quality across institutions, limited follow-up and mentorship after training, and insufficient alignment between training content and the realities of local classrooms. Moreover, teacher assessments often rely on outdated metrics, making it difficult to capture meaningful indicators of teacher growth and student impact.
A PhD candidate in this area could contribute by designing or analyzing evaluation frameworks grounded in local contexts yet informed by global best practices. This involves collecting and interpreting both qualitative and quantitative data from stakeholders—teacher trainees, instructors, school leaders, and policymakers—to identify strengths and gaps. Such research is vital for designing more effective, equitable, and data-driven teacher education programs that respond to the evolving educational needs of Morocco and African countries.
