CEDoc - UM6P - [IWRI] : On Heatwaves risk mapping in Morocco
The Mediterranean region is highly susceptible to a range of extreme climatic events, causing significant economic, social, and infrastructural impacts. Existing efforts to monitor these hazards have relied on climatic data from sparse gauge stations, resulting in underrepresentation of many areas. This is particularly problematic for regions characterized by high vulnerability due to poverty and illiteracy. Although advancements in gridded datasets have improved coverage, their limited spatial resolution poses challenges for accurately capturing extreme events. This project aims to enhance the understanding and prediction of heatwaves events by utilizing statistical analyses and machine learning techniques. By generating new datasets through data augmentation and fusion, we will address the limitations of current data. Additionally, climate models will be employed to simulate weather patterns associated with the occurence risks. A comprehensive modeling approach will be adopted to predict and manage these risks. The project will also develop multimodal AI systems to analyze diverse data sources, improving the prediction of heatwaves. Risk assessment and mapping will be conducted for the natural hazards in Morocco and the Mediterranean basin expressed by heatwaves.This holistic approach aims to enhance early detection systems, inform adaptation measures, and support sustainable development in the region.
