Role Summary
The IB DP English A Teacher is responsible for planning, teaching and assessing a rigorous English A course (Language and Literature and/or Literature) in line with IB standards and practices. The teacher will foster a stimulating learning environment where students develop advanced language skills, critical thinking, and a love of literature, while embodying the IB Learner Profile attributes.
This role also involves supporting
Extended Essays (EE)
in English and potentially contributing to
TOK
or other aspects of the DP core, depending on experience.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
- Plan, deliver, and reflect on engaging lessons for
IB DP English A
(Language and Literature and/or Literature) in line with IB requirements. - Use a range of teaching strategies that promote inquiry, critical thinking, creativity and student agency.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including EAL students and high achievers.
- Integrate ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills explicitly into lessons and learning engagements.
Curriculum & Assessment
- Design unit plans aligned with the
IB DP English A guide
and the school's curriculum framework. - Develop clear assessment criteria and use formative and summative assessment to monitor progress and provide feedback.
- Prepare students effectively for internal and external DP assessments, including orals, written tasks, and examinations.
- Contribute to the ongoing review and development of the English A curriculum and departmental documentation.
IB Core & Student Support
- Supervise
Extended Essays
in English and guide students through the research and writing process. - Collaborate with the DP Coordinator and colleagues to support implementation of the
DP core
(TOK, CAS, EE). - Provide academic guidance, mentoring and pastoral support to students, helping them manage workload and develop strong study skills.
Collaboration & Professionalism
- Work closely with the DP Coordinator and subject team to ensure alignment with
IB standards and practices
. - Participate in staff meetings, collaborative planning, professional development and IB training.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with parents/guardians about student progress and learning.
- Contribute positively to the wider school life, events and activities in line with PMIS values and ethos.
Safeguarding & Well-being
- Uphold the school's
Child Protection and Safeguarding policies
at all times. - Promote a safe, inclusive and respectful classroom environment for all students.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
- Bachelor's degree in
English, Literature, Linguistics, Education
or a closely related field. - Recognised
teaching qualification
(e.g. PGCE, QTS, M.Ed., CAPES or equivalent). - Minimum of
2–3 years' teaching experience
in secondary education. - Strong command of English
(native or near-native level). - Experience teaching
IB DP English A
or a similar rigorous pre-university English curriculum (A-Level, AP, etc.).
Desirable:
- Previous experience in an
IB World School
. - Experience supervising
Extended Essays
and/or contributing to
TOK
. - Experience working in an international and/or multilingual context.
- Familiarity with Montessori principles and a child-centred approach is an asset.
